Chiasso, Switzerland. 30 October 2007 – Allied Telesis, a global provider of secure IP/Ethernet access solutions and an industry leader in the deployment of IP Triple Play networks over copper and fiber access infrastructures, today announced the AT-9424T, its new 24 port, entry-level Layer 3 Gigabit Ethernet switch. Its low price makes it ideal for small companies and educational institutions, who can save money by buying just the features they need in the short to mid-term, and upgrade to higher-end switches as they grow. As a member of Allied Telesis’ successful 9400 switch series, the AT-9424T is delivered with 24 x 10/100/1000T Gigabit ports and 4 x SFP bays for fiber connectivity. As it is only one rack unit high, it is well suited to environments where space is limited.

As the AT-9424T utilizes many of the same components as the more powerful switches in the 9400 series, manufacturing costs can be kept down by efficient production in high volumes, not by compromising on the switch’s performance. Because organizations looking for an entry-level switch are unlikely to need them, the AT-9424T does not offer certain extras, such as a redundant power supply unit, a memory slot, or a stacking module. However, it does include the same software and user interface as the 9400 series, as well as a number of other key features. For example, the AT-9424T delivers traffic prioritization and other Quality of Service (QoS) and IGMP capabilities for today’s voice and video enabled networks. With advanced security functions that come as standard, the AT-9424T offers built-in protection against Denial of Service (DoS) attacks as well as tiered security on each port.

While some organizations decide to buy full-featured switches that adapt to their growth over a number of years, research by Allied Telesis shows that many prefer entry-level, lower-priced equipment to keep costs down in the short term, then buy a fuller-featured switch later on when the need arises. With its own manufacturing facilities, Allied Telesis can build a degree of flexibility into its production processes.
